Transfer ROM 771801 --> 771823?

Hi, I wish to recover the USB3.0 WD Passport having controller "771801".

According to the information is this sub-category, the matching SATA controller is 771823.

However, as seen from the attached pictures, the ROM chip, U12, is different physically -- the
newer, 771823 controller has the solder legs Under the U12 chip but the Patient controller,
771801 has regular solder legs.
- I think they refer to the newer legs-under ROM chip as an "SMT" (surface-mount) chip.

Anyway, SMT's are no fun to work with regular soldering tools, plus I can't be sure the legs/pinouts match.
Point is, I can foresee a whole lot of work leading to disappointment.

So, this is where transferring the ROM digitally through PC3000 would/should be ideal. However, a new
problem is the controller cards do not come ready on PC3K (not even Kernel Mode), so this normal ROM-
transfer procedure on PC3K won't work.

Does anyone know how to transfer that ROM digitally? Another solution? (probably solder a SATA conn. to the USB, right?)

Read the ROM through terminal. Use Toshiba adapter.

I would like clarification as far as what is connected to what and simple
how to use.

Do this outside of PC3000(?)

There is no posible to read ROM ouside of PC3000 this way.

Hi. I was able to read and preserve the Donor ROM - big deal I know,
but it was good to see the Toshiba adapter on the SATA card work together!

However, I cannot get PC3K to read the ROM from the patient card,
which has the USB connector. How to read the ROM in this case?

If I need to get a dedicated ROM programmer, which one works with PC3000?
I would like to know the procedure.

Platterpuss, use WD 2,5 terminal adapter to read the ROM from USB drive, here you can see how to connect it: viewtopic.php?f=156&t=8857
