HDS725050KLAT80

Postby Bruno » 30.08.11, 18:59

Hi all

I have a patient HDS725050KLAT80 where the klient bringing to us with death PCB.
He try with other IBM-PCB's, befor we receive the HDD.

I have a donor drivesame type "HDS725050KLAT80", so i swap both the ROM and NVRAM form batient to donor PCB by soldering. The Drive dont spinup after Power on in pc3k.
This is the log:
Loading data for correction of HDD family handling settings from section 7250KLA3
NV-RAM reading.......................... : Ok

Selected family......................... : CUSTOM
Model by ID............................. : <ID IS NOT READ>

Techno mode key......................... : Ok

Loading resources from Database
Folder: /CUSTOM/HDS725050KLAT80 K2AOAB0A KRVA05ZAKWZ3PH/Utility Start Resources

Loading modules table................................................. : Ok (~USAG.rpm)
Access violation at address 0B586855 in module 'PCIBM32.dll'. Read of address 00000008
Loading the table of "open" modules................................... : Ok (OpenDir)
Loading zone allocation table......................................... : Ok (~ZONE.rpm)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I opened the HDD in cleanroom. The spindle is not blocked.

Now i Try to start the donor HDD with the modified PCB. The drive start spinup and i switched off.

I checked the Motorwinding by Ohmmeter. On Patent all three points have ~1,17 Ohm. On Donor same.
Why the Drive dont spinup??
Any Idees?
Thanks for help

Hello Bruno

Please provide me both NV-Ram and ROM dumps from patient drive. I believe there are some trash characters inside.
One more thing you could try by yourself. Check your hard drive's stock if you have a logic board with same stickers I highlighted on my picture bellow.
Logic board with same numbers is 100% compartible to your patient and if there are no other problems with drive it will start correctly.

Please check.

Also tell me please, explain:

Same pcb with other ROM and NV-Ram chip?

Dear Roustam
Thank you for fast answer.
Yes i test start donor drive with donor-PCB and ROM+NVRAM from patient drive, and there spinup. Only the patient drive with the same PCB not. So i think the ROM and NVRAM are not the problem.

Sticker from patient drive:
OA29252
BA1739_
M4a705
H4M7

Sticker from donor drive
OA29252
BA1739_
M4a647
82v5

What could i test anymore?

Malfunctionous heads stack and problem surface is left.

So you should proceed in the next way.
First of all open the drive's lid and see if there are no visible scratches and metal dust on air filter. If everything is clear, check your donor drive for MLC code on its top sticker has to be similar but not same. (just in case - donor must have same model as patient).
I also advise you using donor logic board with donors ROM and NV-Ram chips, since it is possible that patient ones may have problems.

Dear Roustam
Before i swap RAM and NVRAM by soldering from patient to donor PCB, i try to start the patient drive wit donor PCB, -
Without success. Spindle is not blocked.
Previus history is that. On a evening when the Client comming home, he see the ext. HDD not working. He checking PS and found there is faoult. Eventualy coult it be that a blitz destroyed the PS and HDD.
Could it be, that the Preamp is defect too, because the drive dont spinup?

Dear Bruno,

The first thing you have to try in this case is turn on drive from safe mode and switch SA access and start the drive.
This will show you if you can able to get access to SA in the current state or not.

Dear Sasha

Nice to hear from you outside of flash-cases. :)

I have done what you write:
-Set savemode by jumper
-switching SA access
- and start trhe utillity
here ist the output:

Question: why the last of 3 entry, of NV-RAM ID are different to the previous two?

Dear Guru's

In the meantime i have changed the MHA in cleanroom.
Now the drive is spinningup, but dont display the Model or SN.
Not nocking. I start the utility by selecting model mauel and resources from profile.
In HDD configuration and editing tool, Model and SN are correct..
