I think that you might have one of the following:

#1) bad pcb
#2) used an incompatible loader for accessing sa
#3) bad head

try to check items #1 and #2 first as they are the most easy to fix
i believe that you can have a good set of loaders by downloading and installing the maxtor updates from your update box
